Project Overview: Deep Foundation Support for Solar Test Facility
Straight Line Construction recently completed a high-performance helical pier installation in Arvada, Colorado, providing essential preconstruction foundation support for a new solar test facility. The company behind the facility was preparing to conduct a specialty solar project with unique structural and environmental demands, requiring stable, engineered supports to mount and test a variety of specialized solar products. The project required deep, stable anchoring to handle significant structural loads and potential lateral movement—making it a perfect application for our engineered helical pier system.
Engineered Helical Pier System Designed for Stability
To meet the demands of the site and anticipated structural loads, Straight Line utilized 8 5/8″ helical piers with a double helix configuration, featuring 16-inch and 18-inch diameter bearing plates. This configuration was selected specifically to handle the large overturning moments expected from the structure, while maximizing load capacity and lateral resistance.
A single 20-foot pier section was chosen for each location to increase lateral stability. Each pier achieved an embedment depth of 15 feet below grade, as determined by the project’s lateral load analysis. The remaining 5 feet above grade allowed each pier to be precisely trimmed and fitted with a top flange, creating a secure mechanical connection to the new structure above. This design flexibility ensured a seamless integration with the project’s foundation plans.
Fast, Efficient Installation Using Heavy-Duty Equipment
Straight Line deployed Ram Jack’s specialized equipment to complete the job quickly and accurately. Using a 60K Direct Drive torque head, our crew was able to mobilize and install all three helical piers in a single day, minimizing disruption and keeping the project on schedule.
This equipment allowed for precise torque monitoring to ensure each pier reached the necessary capacity and installation depth. The result: long-term stability and a reliable deep foundation system ready to support construction.
