What Are Helical Piers? One of the Most Stable Solutions for Residential Foundations in Denver

If your home is experiencing cracks, uneven floors, or signs of settling, you’re not alone. Many Denver homeowners face foundation issues due to the region’s expansive soils and extreme seasonal weather shifts. Fortunately, helical piers offer one of the most stable solutions for residential foundations—whether you’re recovering a sinking home or preparing for a new addition.

At Ram Jack Colorado, with over 40 years of experience, we specialize in foundation repair using industry-leading helical pier systems engineered for long-term support and peace of mind.

What Exactly Is a Helical Pier?

A helical pier, sometimes called a screw pile, is a steel shaft fitted with one or more helical (spiral-shaped) plates. These piers are mechanically advanced into the ground like a giant screw, anchoring into stable, load-bearing soil far beneath the shifting upper layers.

This technology is trusted across the country—and especially in the Denver area—for both residential and commercial foundation repair.

Helical piers are commonly used to:

  • Recover sinking foundations and correct structural movement

  • Stabilize or lift homes showing signs of foundation failure

  • Support new construction piers for additions, decks, sunrooms, and garages

  • Provide deep, lasting support in areas with poor or unpredictable soil

Why Helical Piers Work So Well in Colorado

Homes in Denver and across Colorado’s Front Range are built on highly expansive clay soils. These soils absorb water and swell during wet seasons, then contract when dry. This constant movement places enormous stress on your foundation, often resulting in:

  • Sloping or uneven floors

  • Cracks in drywall or brick

  • Doors and windows that stick or won’t close properly

Helical piers solve the problem by bypassing unstable surface layers and anchoring your home into solid, undisturbed soil below. This provides a stable base that isn’t affected by seasonal changes.

Benefits of Helical Piers for Foundation Repair

Whether you’re dealing with an existing home or planning a new addition, helical piers offer several advantages over traditional repair methods:

 Fast, low-disruption installation

  • Minimal excavation and mess
  • Ideal for limited-access or tight spaces
  • Immediate load-bearing capacity
  • Engineered for long-term performance

Supporting New Construction: Piers for Additions

Helical piers aren’t just for fixing problems—they’re also a smart solution when building home additions or structures like decks, garages, or sunrooms. If your soil is soft, shifting, or poorly compacted, helical piers ensure your addition has a rock-solid foundation from day one.

This preventative approach can save you thousands in potential repairs down the road.

Signs You Might Need Helical Piers

If you’re seeing any of these red flags, your home may benefit from a helical pier system:

  • Cracks around doors, windows, or in walls

  • Uneven or bouncy floors

  • Gaps between ceilings and walls

  • Doors or windows that no longer open or close correctly

Don’t wait until the problem gets worse. Foundation damage rarely improves on its own—and early intervention can help avoid more costly repairs later.

About Ram Jack

Ram Jack is a family-owned business that began operations in 1968, in Ada, OK, where we currently source our piers and brackets. Back then, concrete piering was the original repair method used simply because it was the only technology available at the time. Over time, it became evident that concrete piers did not provide long-term stabilization of foundations and only provided a short-term warranty period. To guarantee the highest grade of customer satisfaction, a greater solution needed to be found.

The Ram Jack owners embarked on a research program to develop a foundation repair system to stand the test of time. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office first issued a patent to Ram Jack for its foundation repair system in 1985. Over the next few years, additional refinements and patents have followed, resulting in the strongest patented system in the industry. Ram Jack driven pilings are ICC-ES recognized (International Construction Code—Evaluation Services). Ram Jack is one of only two ICC-ES recognized foundation repair companies in the industry. Ram Jack’s products meet or exceed code requirements set down by ICC-ES for both commercial and residential properties.
