Excavation Support and Underpinning for School Expansion

Straight Line Construction completed a soil nail wall Parker CO project at Sierra Middle School. The team supported an existing school wing during expansion. As a result, they enabled a safe 15-foot vertical excavation next to the structure. The system combined micropiles, Ram Jack brackets, and a permanent shotcrete soil nail wall. This approach delivered strong structural support and reliable earth retention.

Additionally, Straight Line Construction worked closely with Nunn Construction and the design team. They advanced the shoring system through design and bidding phases. Consequently, the project stayed aligned with structural and scheduling requirements.

Site Constraints and Wall Design

The project required a permanent soil nail wall Parker CO system to resist lateral earth pressure. Therefore, crews installed the wall in three controlled lifts of four to five feet. However, limited access near the structure created installation challenges. Cold weather also affected shotcrete placement and curing. As a result, the team used precise sequencing and consistent installation methods.

Micropile System and Structural Support

Straight Line Construction installed 25 micropiles to depths of about 30 feet. They used 40mm hollow threaded reinforcing for strength and durability. In addition, crews added 18 feet of threaded guide sleeve at the top of each pile. This detail improved stiffness and alignment during excavation. Ram Jack brackets transferred structural loads into the micropiles. Meanwhile, the shotcrete wall encased the system for continuous support.

Installation Process and Performance

The team followed a controlled process to ensure performance of the soil nail wall Parker CO system. As a result, they maintained stability throughout construction.

  • Installed 25 underpinning micropiles before excavation
  • Completed excavation in three planned lifts
  • Installed soil nails, reinforcement, and shotcrete at each stage
  • Encased micropiles within the shotcrete wall system
  • Applied final shotcrete facing for long-term support

Therefore, this process controlled soil movement and protected the existing structure.

Shotcrete Wall Construction and Facing

Crews installed the soil nail wall Parker CO system in stages to maintain excavation stability. Initially, they installed 28 soil nails. Then, they added 48 more as excavation progressed. Finally, they installed another 48 soil nails at full depth.

The wall included a 4-inch temporary facing and an 8-inch permanent shotcrete layer. Additionally, crews installed a ledger board above the wall as a screed guide. This ensured consistent thickness and alignment. As a result, the new foundation wall will align within one to two inches of the shotcrete surface.

About Ram Jack

Ram Jack is a family-owned business that began operations in 1968, in Ada, OK, where we currently source our piers and brackets. Back then, concrete piering was the original repair method used simply because it was the only technology available at the time. Over time, it became evident that concrete piers did not provide long-term stabilization of foundations and only provided a short-term warranty period. To guarantee the highest grade of customer satisfaction, a greater solution needed to be found.

The Ram Jack owners embarked on a research program to develop a foundation repair system to stand the test of time. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office first issued a patent to Ram Jack for its foundation repair system in 1985. Over the next few years, additional refinements and patents have followed, resulting in the strongest patented system in the industry. Ram Jack driven pilings are ICC-ES recognized (International Construction Code—Evaluation Services). Ram Jack is one of only two ICC-ES recognized foundation repair companies in the industry. Ram Jack’s products meet or exceed code requirements set down by ICC-ES for both commercial and residential properties.
