Innovative Foundation Solutions in Los Angeles: A Helical Pier Success Story

Foundation Repair for Los Angeles Film Studios

Los Angeles is synonymous with the entertainment industry and hosts numerous film production studios. These facilities include soundstages, offices, and support spaces designed for various creative projects. A critical part of maintaining these expansive structures is ensuring a strong, stable foundation. When one studio needed foundation stabilization for a major expansion, Ram Jack and Straight Line Construction teamed up to tackle the challenge.

Helical Pier Foundation Stabilization in Los Angeles

Straight Line Construction recently completed a significant foundation repair project in Los Angeles. They used helical piers to stabilize and support a production facility. Collaborating with Ram Jack, which conducts seismic testing with the University of California San Diego, they chose Ram Jack’s piers exclusively for this project. The foundation stabilization required precise planning and expertise. This ensured the structure could support future expansions while also meeting seismic safety standards.

Over eight weeks, they installed 708 helical piers, using 53,775 feet of steel—the equivalent of 10 miles. This efficient process reinforced the studio’s foundation, preparing it for continued success in the fast-paced entertainment industry.

Comprehensive Load Testing for Seismic Stability

The project involved both new construction and underpinning piers, with design loads ranging from 40 to 60 kips. Ram Jack’s seismic-tested piers supported these loads. Extensive testing, beyond standard single compression or tension tests, set this project apart. They verified the performance of both 3.5 and 4.5-inch piers in all configurations. Changes in helical disc sizes required re-testing when necessary. Additionally, they conducted lateral load tests on full mock-ups to ensure long-term stability and seismic resilience.

A 60k drive head was used to install helical piers of 4.5in diameter pipe shaft and a 12-14in helical disc assembly to depths up to 60 feet.

Project Efficiency: Completing Ahead of Schedule

Straight Line Construction met the tight deadlines for the facility’s expansion by employing three specialized crews. These crews worked 12-hour days, six days a week. By closely collaborating with excavation and demolition teams, they completed the project in just eight weeks. This was well ahead of the expected 16-week timeframe. Their approach ensured a high-quality solution while keeping the studio’s production schedule on track.

They managed to exceed the demands of an aggressive production schedule. Using helical piers provided a strong, durable foundation. This approach also exceeded safety and performance expectations. Rigorous testing, strategic planning, and collaboration with other trades further enhanced the project’s success.

Now, the facility is ready to handle future expansions and withstand Los Angeles’ seismic activity. About Ram Jack

Ram Jack is a family-owned business that began operations in 1968, in Ada, OK, where we currently source our piers and brackets. Back then, concrete piering was the original repair method used simply because it was the only technology available at the time. Over time, it became evident that concrete piers did not provide long-term stabilization of foundations and only provided a short-term warranty period. To guarantee the highest grade of customer satisfaction, a greater solution needed to be found.

The Ram Jack owners embarked on a research program to develop a foundation repair system to stand the test of time. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office first issued a patent to Ram Jack for its foundation repair system in 1985. Over the next few years, additional refinements and patents have followed, resulting in the strongest patented system in the industry. Ram Jack driven pilings are ICC-ES recognized (International Construction Code—Evaluation Services). Ram Jack is one of only two ICC-ES recognized foundation repair companies in the industry. Ram Jack’s products meet or exceed code requirements set down by ICC-ES for both commercial and residential properties.
